1980s Tama Superstar Bop 3 Piece Drum Shell Pack – 12×8, 14×14, 18×14 – Piano Black

1980s Tama Superstar in hard to find bop sizes. 12×8, 14×14, and 18×14. Made in Japan. Birch shells. The 12″ tom is a converted Superstar concert tom with a T badge added from a donor drum. It was converted when I got it, I just added the badge. The 14″ and 18″ are factory. All of them have been refinished (twice). They were originally gloss white from the factory but at some point the previous owner repainted them rather poorly in black (just why?) and converted the 12″ to a regular tom. When I got them I sanded them down and re-lacquered them again in gloss black. It’s not a flawless job but it’s respectable. No runs or sags on the exteriors but there are still some on the interiors from the first repaint (pictures available). Some spots have more of an orange peel finish but you need to look close. The interior of the bass drum also has some marks from when the lacquer was drying.

Whoever did the first repaint sprayed over the bearing edges, so I leveled and re-cut them to the original profile. The bearing edges are perfect now. Most of the hardware is original except for the resonant hoop on the 12″ tom and 6 bass drum lugs which I had to replace. I will look to see if I have a 12″ Tama hoop in my storage. There are a few tiny specs of rust on some of the lug inserts but otherwise the hardware is in great shape with only light pitting scattered around. All of the hardware was cleaned and polished. All tension rods match and have washers. The leg brackets on the 14″ floor tom have some stress marks starting to show as is common with those. The badges on the 14″ and 18″ have lost most of their original black paint. The heads are older but still have life in them. Some of the white bass drum logo has been touched up with paint.

Overall it’s a very nice player’s kit that would be great for jazz or small gigs. Lots more pictures available on request.
